February 2014 Field Trip

Southeast end of the LC Flood Control Dam
Saturday, February 15, 2014
**please note this field trip is the Saturday BEFORE the program on February 19, 2014***
Nancy Stotz will be leading us to check out Las Cruces’ newest constructed wetland behind the Las Cruces Dam, and do some late winter sparrowing.
Meet at 7:15 AM at Sagecrest Park, at the corner of Frontier Avenue and Roadrunner Parkway, one block north of the stoplight at the intersection of Roadrunner and Golf Club Drive.
We’ll start with a quick visit to see if there are any ducks on the wetland, part of a joint City and US Army Corps of Engineers environmental restoration project. Then we’ll continue down the arroyo to a weedy area that has been pretty productive for sparrows in recent weeks. If time allows, we’ll also check out a few other patches around some volunteer cottonwood stands that can sometimes yield interesting birds. Be prepared to walk a couple of miles in soft sand, and realize that chasing sparrows may require wading into some thigh-high, seedy, and burr-laden vegetation. In other words, don’t wear your favorite pair of socks!
